500 worlds of assignment

This project allowed me to discover an artwork I always been interested of. This field has permitted me to rediscover Cardiff and the way of how I’m looking the different buildings. My actual course is interior architecture so I’ve always been interested about such of things like, building, architecture, old/ new, colours, materials.. But this field gave me a new perspective to deal with my futur work.

I really enjoyed the different workshops I did. Especially those where we did books because I think that i could be able to do some in the futur if I want it. I kept all the books I did because I could  used them as the sketchbooks.

The thing I have less enjoyed is the screen printing, but maybe because we were to much, the whole group of the field was here in the same time, so it have a lot of wait between all the different things we had to do, and i couldn’t barely see perfectly the way of making because of the number that we were in each “rooms of process”

I do like my bookmark but if I have to do it again I think that I will choose the business card this time because its much more utile than the bookmark in my professional life. And maybe now as I know how it works i could choose other pattern to do something more complex in term of form, colour…

They also gave me the necessary skills to do my personal book.

How I did my own book ?

At the beginning I wanted to print all my pictures on a A1 and fold the paper to make the different pages of the book. But unfortunately i completely  forget  to leave a blank page each side of my artwork to be glued to the cover. So I had to cut all the picture and glue them on a new “book” constituted  of two A1 glued together and already folded. On those picture I wanted to have a translucent page on which I will glued some elements, building of our days to be able to see what have changed since the first picture. But to be honest when I glued the translucent paper it wasn’t the result that I expected because the paper warped and it didn’t give a clean result as I wanted…

I chose to work with black and white picture for the old one and in full colour for the new to emphasised the contrast between them and permit to identify easily what have changed or not.

Each element I choose to add is what is really now, because the rest is just the same as before, nothing have changed.

I chose this format because it is like a map that we can fold and unfolded, this format in particularly because my book is like a map to discover Cardiff, my special place that i’m used to see in the city. The order I chose represent the nearest to the furthest sites from my house.

The content of my book :

    • National Museum of Cardiff
    • The New Theatre
    • Castle Street
    • Queen Street
    • St Mary Street
    • Castle Arcade
    • Fitzthammon Embankment street
    • The royal Exchange
    • Queen Street train station
    • Queen Street train station Rail line
    • Wimpy
    • Cardiff Bay

The SPECIAL COLLECTION

The book i chose “Othello – A bestiary ( with Floral Additions)” is a wordless reworking of william Shakespeare’s “Othello” as an illustrated collection of common, rare and fabulous animals. The book artist is Borbonesa. In removing the text he present a deconstructed version of the original book in which the storyline is plotted by the guinea-hens, baboons, blind puppies, strawberries and figs that inhabit the speeches of Shakespeare’s human characters. These faunal and floral forms are arranged in their original sequence so the structure of the play is visually revealed.

The format of this book is quite simple, the cover is light powder blue and his dimensions are around 33x50x18mm when it it’s closed, around 1620x50mm when it it’s open. The colour oh the sheet is cream white and it is like a folded bookwork.

In my opinion we can easily make this book in our own, we have to fold a long sheet of paper and then we can used the technique we learned with tom for the cover

I chose this book because I thought the aesthetic of this one was interesting. First the I liked the  white band above it with the black and white draw on it. then when we remove it we can see a red strawberry which is contrast with the rest of the book. And then the format is very interesting. its not usual to see this type of book.

THEN AND NOW

The History of Cardiff in Pictures

“How urbanization marks today’s society? “

Today Cardiff is a fast growing, high tech, modern city, but it hasn’t always been that way.  Cardiff, like many other cities, has a wealth of history that deserves to be explored and remembered.

My work will consist to found old pictures of cardiff, streets, buildings.. and find the same actual here. I will take the identical photo and then print it, cut it and glue some piece of the actual place on the old one to show how the urbanisation mark the world in our day. It will show the contrast between black and white picture and colour one and the difference of the same street, road, buildings, place few years after the first photography.

My book will be articulated like a accordion folding. Maybe put each picture of the “older to the most actual one” like a story-telling of cardiff.

SCREEN PRINTING

Today we needed to prepare something before to go the the print workshop. We had the choice between two different thing : a bookmark or a business card. I chose the bookmark. The design I chose to draw was lines who represents the streets of the city.   (few example just below). I chose this design because its links with the topic I choose :”

“How urbanization marks today’s society? “ .

At the beginning Laura explained us everything how the different machines work.

So first we have to a screen where we have to depose the

Step 1 : draw the design of mw bookmark in black

Step 2: The screen is prepared

The printer will choose a mesh screen to suit the complexity of the design, and the texture of the fabric being printed. The mesh screen is then coated with a layer of light-reactive emulsion, which will harden when developed under bright light.

Step 3: The emulsion is exposed

The acetate sheet featuring the design is then laid onto the emulsion-coated screen, and the whole thing is exposed to a very bright light. The light hardens the emulsion, so the parts of the screen which are covered by the design remain in liquid form.

Step 4: The emulsion is washed off, creating the stencil

After the screen has been exposed for a set time, the areas of the screen not covered by the design will have turned hard. Any unhardened emulsion is then carefully rinsed away. This leaves a clear imprint of the design on the screen for the ink to pass through.

The screen is then dried, and the printer will make any necessary touch-ups or corrections to make the imprint as accurate as possible to the original design. The stencil is now ready to be used.

STEP 5: THE ITEM IS PREPARED FOR PRINT

The screen is then placed on the printing press. The sheet of paper underneath the screen.

Step 6: The ink is pressed through the screen onto the item

The screen is lowered down onto the printing board. Ink is added to the top end of the screen, and a squeegee is used to pull the ink along the full length of the screen. This presses the ink through the open areas of the stencil, imprinting the design on the product underneath.

If the printer is creating multiple items, then the screen is raised and a new garment is placed onto the printing board. The process is then repeated.

Once all the items have been printed and the stencil has served its purpose, the emulsion is removed using a special washing fluid so the mesh can be reused to create new stencils.

Step 7: The product is dried, checked and finished

The printed product then passes through a dryer, which ‘cures’ the ink and creates a smooth, colourfast finish. The final product will be checked and washed thoroughly to remove any residue, before being passed on to its new owner.

MY POSTERPOSTER

I  choose my book’s topics and i want it to speak about how human have an impact on the earth, how the modernisation in the time could affect our way of life  so I took an important topic for me to made my poster : the vegetarianism in our days.

Basically i’m not vegetarian but I aim to be, I realised devastation that the meat industry is having on the environment this summer. I read many books about it like the “ Antispéciste” of Aymeric Caron who talk about all the relation of every lie alive. I knew what’s is meat but with those books I’m more concern about animal and their conditions of living. Most of them are crammed into cages where they can barely move and fed a  diet tainted with pesticides and antibiotics.

So basically on my poster the thing which represents this specific part of my reflexion is the asian woman who is supposed to represents me and who is “forced” to be feed. But in this case it’s like good food because I’m actually in transition between eating meat and not eat it anymore.

Moreover the text we can see behind I took an extract of the book “ Antispéciste” of Aymeric Caron.

The other illustration is just because we don’t talk enough about important topics in our days, they still people who don’t know anything about it or who don’t think is enough important to pay attention to this topic. Media are too quiet

Field 5 – Printer Mater

Sean Edward introduced us our new field far our next 5 weeks from now. This files will talk mostly about the artist books, printed matters and how they proceed as a tool for the dissiminetion of artist’s research.

This morning we talked about the different forms of art book that Sean choose for us today, we talk about different books artists like Ed Ruscha, Jonathan Monk, Adrian piper..

Then we had all to chose one and say why it attracted us or why we like this one in particular..

I choose a little one, a very simple one actually, which call “radio” this book took my attention on because of thr format, the colors matched together and the type of paper : thick, ivory : natural type all what I like ! Apparently this kind of book are easy to make.

During the afternoon we had like a little  workshop with  Tom Martin in his studio and we made a little handbook on our own

How we proceed :

  • we had to fold the different sheets which will composed the book in two A5 (4xA4 sheets)
  • then we did 3 holes in the middle, on the spine of those sheets, with a tool.. 2 cm from the top and the bottom and one in the middle
  • We used a wire into those holes to tie all the sheets together
  • We took thicker sheet of paper et we fold them in two like before, we draw a line on one side and we put some glue on it. Then we had to glue the thicker paper each side of the booklet already made, so we obtain something which composed of 2x thick pages, 8x whites sheets and 2x thick sheets again.
  • We took a rigid papier like cardboard, we had to cut in the good dimension the book cover and the back of the book. We took a plastic coloured paper and we did the join between the both. Thanks to that join we will be able to open and close the book as we want.
  • Finally we glued the booklet inside the two covers and we obtained the final book

It was quite interesting to do something like that with school because I’ve nerveir did that with my home university before and now we are able to do it again and again on our own.

Field Object – Post n°8

This weekend I went to the park with 3 friends of mine, Kathrin, Marvin and Audrey. like that we can be 3 to do the displayed and another one to take the picture during the sitting of the artwork up. It was really hard but funny to do it with my friends, we laughed so hard. It was a group work with my friends. I think it was a good idea to do it with my friends because the main meaning of my project is the friendship.

So at the beginning we searched and found the place for the display, we found a big tree  with big branch in the middle of the park. Thanks to Marvin we could climb to the tree and hung the artwork with plastic wire. It was really difficult to hooked the plastic wire around the branch because they were very far from each other so Kathrin joined me in the tree to helped me to fix the wire. Audrey took all the picture.

Field Object – Post n°7

Finally I finished my final artwork with all of the red cup. I took my main inspiration from the …… which was presented by J.Clarkson during the first lecture. I really wanted something airy and ephemeral, it was the main thing for me. During my reflection I thought about something which represented my life in Cardiff since I came here. At the beginning I think I wasn’t enough deep into my reflexion  so I decided to think about it again.

For my artwork I think that the main structure represents my life since i’m here in Cardiff, something constituted with red cup we used my friends and I during our numerous party together. I choose this little object (the red cups) because for me it is the most iconic object that I know, the one which reminds you, partys, friends, good memories, socialisation, laughing moments. It was important for me to do something links with the friends I met here. I think that my adventure in cardiff wouldn’t be so pleasant without them. I was really lucky to met them the first day in the Uni. We got along very well from the beginning.

We really are a multicultural group : German, Suisse, Belgium, French, Irish. So different but so similar, we aren’t in the same classe, even in the same school but every moment that we can spend together we spend it together.

The little red cup around the main structure means the explosion of knowledge we gained since we are here with everybody, we extend our horizons, found internal friends, speak different language together.

I think that since I’m here I can say i saw more my cardiff’s friends than my french friends for the same time in France. It’s always difficult to see our friends even if they are in the same city of us and here I really have the impression it’s more easier to met them, more spontaneous. And because of that or thanks to that we can say we really are like a big family, reals friends. Friends are very  important during an Erasmus Experience. At the beginning I was really scared about to not find friends, because I’m not used to be sociale or something like that. But as I told before since I’m here I’m really a different person. I don’t recognise myself, like a better version of me.

The place that I choose : the Bute park. At the beginning I choose this place because it is the park that I have to crosse every time I want to go the the Uni or go somewhere in the city. I thought of the landscape and the lights which could be interresting into the park as well.  I wanted to hung my artwork between to three to just have the the structure on the photography.

But after when I thought again about my display I choose the hung it into tree and have all the branches on the picture. The tree represents the created links between us like a genealogy trees
