End of Project Evaluation Post

For this final project in Cardiff Met I had to do a restaurant in an existent building in the middle of the city center: Ask Italia. It was interesting to work on something real even if the project won’t be real. In my opinion, the existing site was complex because of its specific shape, and its actual organization on three different floors. I liked to work and imagined a new concept for it. It permitted me to treat about something I really like and about I’m really interested in. With this project I realized that I’m really into an organic style, with raw materials and colors, even all my inspirations tend to be similar to this kind of things. Simple, clear, without superfluous that the most important thing for me.

I think the way how we are doing our projects here are more efficient for us than in France because it permits us to work on our own sense of creativity and on what we aim to reach in our future work life. I really appreciate discovering this way of working, even if I couldn’t finish properly the semester because of our obligations to go back earlier in France and I regret it a little. This Project went pretty good for me I didn’t have any problem with, just maybe the lack of time I had to work on it was really short for me with all our project but I had enough inspiration and creativity to do it quickly so I did all my best to finish it properly. Even to do a model the last day.
For me this semester was really stressful and I didn’t see the time running, I knew it before to come here it will be hard for us but I couldn’t imagine that bad. So I’m really happy that I was able to submit my project on time.

CITY FIT PROJECT – N°2

Following the choice I did for the place choose my concept will be around a Bio bobo canteen and ultimate landmark of people in need of the healthy break, «Saison» will become the ideal place for your breakfast, moving between two meetings on weekdays or for long lunches with friends. Dishes are full of colors and flavors.

We will love «Saison» for its dream location, its beautiful space on two floors thought and tastefully decorated: Scandinavian-inspired wooden furniture, large marble bar, and beautiful open windows to enjoy the first rays of suns of the day. The decor will be spacious and minimalist with white tiles on the bar area and wicker design chairs.

By reintroducing materials such as textured plaster on the ceiling and white concrete floor will permits us to have harmony between all the floors. I want to reproduce an atmosphere tinged with hot and feminine touches that balance and tempers the radicalism and brutalism of the concrete building’s structure. I want to develop something with a genuine decoration/ atmosphere, simple, minimalist without an unnecessary thing, objects. It will be a mix between wabi-sabi, minimalist, scandi with a big touch of feminine.

Large and high open windows will give brightness and space to the restaurant, We will use incandescents lamps with warmer white color temperatures will create a more relaxed and serene ambiance. With this proper lighting can also help sell products by making the food look more appealing

«Saison» will build its identity with one rule: «fresh product can’t eat the whole year.» That’s why the menu will live and will be changed with the seasons’ rhythm.

To discovered throughout the day, we offer both a breakfast menu (matcha bowl, Açai, pancakes, muesli …) as well as original sandwiches, healthy dishes such as marinated salmon salads or quinoa, sandwiches. avocado or bô bun with tofu. Snack or whole meals you will find what you came for.

To accompany them, nothing better than coffee and tea of course but also natural juices cold pressed.

«Saison» offers a cuisine open on the world, healthy and revisited with a touch of French touch, American and Asian.

CITY FIT PROJECT – N°1

For this project, I choose the topic of «healthy food is a healthy mind», the vegetarianism or the veganism in our days.

Basically, I’m not vegetarian but I aim to be, I realized the devastation that the meat industry is having on the environment this summer. I read many books about it like the “ Antispéciste” of Aymeric Caron who talk about all the relation of every life alive. I knew what’s are the effect of the consumer meat but with those books, I’m more concern about animal and their conditions of living. Most of them are crammed into cages where they can barely move and fed a  diet tainted with pesticides and antibiotics.

Since I’m here one thing really shocked me in the supermarket: the meat, we can find a whole chicken for just 4£ for this price I’m pretty sure that’s is not  “healthy” to eat that. Even to find proper organic food around here it is really complicated for me (or maybe I didn’t search enough but it still a big issue for me)

I was able to find plenty of restaurants which proposed homemade, vegetarian or vegan meals but I’m still not sure about the source of the ingredients and for me its really the most important thing “the source” it could be homemade or vegetarian if the products aren’t staple “good” it isn’t worth it.

So that’s why I chose to propose a concept of this kind of restaurant here in Cardiff. To proposed my idea of what is a good restaurant with healthy and good food.

In my opinion, it will be really interesting to work on this kind of restaurant because it becomes really important in our day to change our food habits and our way of consumption. Architecture is here to answers to those new needs and translates an atmosphere which fit to what we aim to reach.

500 worlds of assignment

This project allowed me to discover an artwork I always been interested of. This field has permitted me to rediscover Cardiff and the way of how I’m looking the different buildings. My actual course is interior architecture so I’ve always been interested about such of things like, building, architecture, old/ new, colours, materials.. But this field gave me a new perspective to deal with my futur work.

I really enjoyed the different workshops I did. Especially those where we did books because I think that i could be able to do some in the futur if I want it. I kept all the books I did because I could  used them as the sketchbooks.

The thing I have less enjoyed is the screen printing, but maybe because we were to much, the whole group of the field was here in the same time, so it have a lot of wait between all the different things we had to do, and i couldn’t barely see perfectly the way of making because of the number that we were in each “rooms of process”

I do like my bookmark but if I have to do it again I think that I will choose the business card this time because its much more utile than the bookmark in my professional life. And maybe now as I know how it works i could choose other pattern to do something more complex in term of form, colour…

They also gave me the necessary skills to do my personal book.

How I did my own book ?

At the beginning I wanted to print all my pictures on a A1 and fold the paper to make the different pages of the book. But unfortunately i completely  forget  to leave a blank page each side of my artwork to be glued to the cover. So I had to cut all the picture and glue them on a new “book” constituted  of two A1 glued together and already folded. On those picture I wanted to have a translucent page on which I will glued some elements, building of our days to be able to see what have changed since the first picture. But to be honest when I glued the translucent paper it wasn’t the result that I expected because the paper warped and it didn’t give a clean result as I wanted…

I chose to work with black and white picture for the old one and in full colour for the new to emphasised the contrast between them and permit to identify easily what have changed or not.

Each element I choose to add is what is really now, because the rest is just the same as before, nothing have changed.

I chose this format because it is like a map that we can fold and unfolded, this format in particularly because my book is like a map to discover Cardiff, my special place that i’m used to see in the city. The order I chose represent the nearest to the furthest sites from my house.

The content of my book :

    • National Museum of Cardiff
    • The New Theatre
    • Castle Street
    • Queen Street
    • St Mary Street
    • Castle Arcade
    • Fitzthammon Embankment street
    • The royal Exchange
    • Queen Street train station
    • Queen Street train station Rail line
    • Wimpy
    • Cardiff Bay

Book conception

My book format : it will be composed of fourteen pages (9.6cm x 20cm) and two cover page (10.4cmx20.8cm ) which are not link together.

I chose to make a book like a geography map the one that we can fold and unfold like an accordion. This format represents the fact that we have like a guide tour of Cardiff in the book with “famous” buildings or streets. For the stuff I needed I bought it the city center and in the print studio at the Uni.

To begins with, I started by cutting bands on A2, I gather 2 bands together with glue and draw  marks every 9.6cm to be able to fold properly the paper and get the content of my book.

For the cover I bought thicker material like carton and I covered it with black paper ( actually I thought about a vinyle cover but i didn’t find it in town and even at the print studio).

I glued the folded pages and the cover together to have my “final” structure for mw book. Then I took my tracing paper which is translucent et cut piece with the same format of each sheet of paper (9.6x20cm) I folded one side of each of them (around 0.8cm), put some glue and glued it each page of the book.

I glued the old picture in the “back” (the proper sheet of paper) and the new things, picture on the tracing paper, it permits us to see what are the differences between then and now at the first sight.

The SPECIAL COLLECTION

The book i chose “Othello – A bestiary ( with Floral Additions)” is a wordless reworking of william Shakespeare’s “Othello” as an illustrated collection of common, rare and fabulous animals. The book artist is Borbonesa. In removing the text he present a deconstructed version of the original book in which the storyline is plotted by the guinea-hens, baboons, blind puppies, strawberries and figs that inhabit the speeches of Shakespeare’s human characters. These faunal and floral forms are arranged in their original sequence so the structure of the play is visually revealed.

The format of this book is quite simple, the cover is light powder blue and his dimensions are around 33x50x18mm when it it’s closed, around 1620x50mm when it it’s open. The colour oh the sheet is cream white and it is like a folded bookwork.

In my opinion we can easily make this book in our own, we have to fold a long sheet of paper and then we can used the technique we learned with tom for the cover

I chose this book because I thought the aesthetic of this one was interesting. First the I liked the  white band above it with the black and white draw on it. then when we remove it we can see a red strawberry which is contrast with the rest of the book. And then the format is very interesting. its not usual to see this type of book.

THEN AND NOW

The History of Cardiff in Pictures

“How urbanization marks today’s society? “

Today Cardiff is a fast growing, high tech, modern city, but it hasn’t always been that way.  Cardiff, like many other cities, has a wealth of history that deserves to be explored and remembered.

My work will consist to found old pictures of cardiff, streets, buildings.. and find the same actual here. I will take the identical photo and then print it, cut it and glue some piece of the actual place on the old one to show how the urbanisation mark the world in our day. It will show the contrast between black and white picture and colour one and the difference of the same street, road, buildings, place few years after the first photography.

My book will be articulated like a accordion folding. Maybe put each picture of the “older to the most actual one” like a story-telling of cardiff.

SCREEN PRINTING

Today we needed to prepare something before to go the the print workshop. We had the choice between two different thing : a bookmark or a business card. I chose the bookmark. The design I chose to draw was lines who represents the streets of the city.   (few example just below). I chose this design because its links with the topic I choose :”

“How urbanization marks today’s society? “ .

At the beginning Laura explained us everything how the different machines work.

So first we have to a screen where we have to depose the

Step 1 : draw the design of mw bookmark in black

Step 2: The screen is prepared

The printer will choose a mesh screen to suit the complexity of the design, and the texture of the fabric being printed. The mesh screen is then coated with a layer of light-reactive emulsion, which will harden when developed under bright light.

Step 3: The emulsion is exposed

The acetate sheet featuring the design is then laid onto the emulsion-coated screen, and the whole thing is exposed to a very bright light. The light hardens the emulsion, so the parts of the screen which are covered by the design remain in liquid form.

Step 4: The emulsion is washed off, creating the stencil

After the screen has been exposed for a set time, the areas of the screen not covered by the design will have turned hard. Any unhardened emulsion is then carefully rinsed away. This leaves a clear imprint of the design on the screen for the ink to pass through.

The screen is then dried, and the printer will make any necessary touch-ups or corrections to make the imprint as accurate as possible to the original design. The stencil is now ready to be used.

STEP 5: THE ITEM IS PREPARED FOR PRINT

The screen is then placed on the printing press. The sheet of paper underneath the screen.

Step 6: The ink is pressed through the screen onto the item

The screen is lowered down onto the printing board. Ink is added to the top end of the screen, and a squeegee is used to pull the ink along the full length of the screen. This presses the ink through the open areas of the stencil, imprinting the design on the product underneath.

If the printer is creating multiple items, then the screen is raised and a new garment is placed onto the printing board. The process is then repeated.

Once all the items have been printed and the stencil has served its purpose, the emulsion is removed using a special washing fluid so the mesh can be reused to create new stencils.

Step 7: The product is dried, checked and finished

The printed product then passes through a dryer, which ‘cures’ the ink and creates a smooth, colourfast finish. The final product will be checked and washed thoroughly to remove any residue, before being passed on to its new owner.

MY POSTERPOSTER

I  choose my book’s topics and i want it to speak about how human have an impact on the earth, how the modernisation in the time could affect our way of life  so I took an important topic for me to made my poster : the vegetarianism in our days.

Basically i’m not vegetarian but I aim to be, I realised devastation that the meat industry is having on the environment this summer. I read many books about it like the “ Antispéciste” of Aymeric Caron who talk about all the relation of every lie alive. I knew what’s is meat but with those books I’m more concern about animal and their conditions of living. Most of them are crammed into cages where they can barely move and fed a  diet tainted with pesticides and antibiotics.

So basically on my poster the thing which represents this specific part of my reflexion is the asian woman who is supposed to represents me and who is “forced” to be feed. But in this case it’s like good food because I’m actually in transition between eating meat and not eat it anymore.

Moreover the text we can see behind I took an extract of the book “ Antispéciste” of Aymeric Caron.

The other illustration is just because we don’t talk enough about important topics in our days, they still people who don’t know anything about it or who don’t think is enough important to pay attention to this topic. Media are too quiet
