Field 5 – Printer Mater

Sean Edward introduced us our new field far our next 5 weeks from now. This files will talk mostly about the artist books, printed matters and how they proceed as a tool for the dissiminetion of artist’s research.

This morning we talked about the different forms of art book that Sean choose for us today, we talk about different books artists like Ed Ruscha, Jonathan Monk, Adrian piper..

Then we had all to chose one and say why it attracted us or why we like this one in particular..

I choose a little one, a very simple one actually, which call “radio” this book took my attention on because of thr format, the colors matched together and the type of paper : thick, ivory : natural type all what I like ! Apparently this kind of book are easy to make.

During the afternoon we had like a little  workshop with  Tom Martin in his studio and we made a little handbook on our own

How we proceed :

  • we had to fold the different sheets which will composed the book in two A5 (4xA4 sheets)
  • then we did 3 holes in the middle, on the spine of those sheets, with a tool.. 2 cm from the top and the bottom and one in the middle
  • We used a wire into those holes to tie all the sheets together
  • We took thicker sheet of paper et we fold them in two like before, we draw a line on one side and we put some glue on it. Then we had to glue the thicker paper each side of the booklet already made, so we obtain something which composed of 2x thick pages, 8x whites sheets and 2x thick sheets again.
  • We took a rigid papier like cardboard, we had to cut in the good dimension the book cover and the back of the book. We took a plastic coloured paper and we did the join between the both. Thanks to that join we will be able to open and close the book as we want.
  • Finally we glued the booklet inside the two covers and we obtained the final book

It was quite interesting to do something like that with school because I’ve nerveir did that with my home university before and now we are able to do it again and again on our own.

Field Object – Post n°8

This weekend I went to the park with 3 friends of mine, Kathrin, Marvin and Audrey. like that we can be 3 to do the displayed and another one to take the picture during the sitting of the artwork up. It was really hard but funny to do it with my friends, we laughed so hard. It was a group work with my friends. I think it was a good idea to do it with my friends because the main meaning of my project is the friendship.

So at the beginning we searched and found the place for the display, we found a big tree  with big branch in the middle of the park. Thanks to Marvin we could climb to the tree and hung the artwork with plastic wire. It was really difficult to hooked the plastic wire around the branch because they were very far from each other so Kathrin joined me in the tree to helped me to fix the wire. Audrey took all the picture.

Finally I finished my final artwork with all of the red cup. I took my main inspiration from the …… which was presented by J.Clarkson during the first lecture. I really wanted something airy and ephemeral, it was the main thing for me. During my reflection I thought about something which represented my life in Cardiff since I came here. At the beginning I think I wasn’t enough deep into my reflexion  so I decided to think about it again.

For my artwork I think that the main structure represents my life since i’m here in Cardiff, something constituted with red cup we used my friends and I during our numerous party together. I choose this little object (the red cups) because for me it is the most iconic object that I know, the one which reminds you, partys, friends, good memories, socialisation, laughing moments. It was important for me to do something links with the friends I met here. I think that my adventure in cardiff wouldn’t be so pleasant without them. I was really lucky to met them the first day in the Uni. We got along very well from the beginning.

We really are a multicultural group : German, Suisse, Belgium, French, Irish. So different but so similar, we aren’t in the same classe, even in the same school but every moment that we can spend together we spend it together.

The little red cup around the main structure means the explosion of knowledge we gained since we are here with everybody, we extend our horizons, found internal friends, speak different language together.

I think that since I’m here I can say i saw more my cardiff’s friends than my french friends for the same time in France. It’s always difficult to see our friends even if they are in the same city of us and here I really have the impression it’s more easier to met them, more spontaneous. And because of that or thanks to that we can say we really are like a big family, reals friends. Friends are very  important during an Erasmus Experience. At the beginning I was really scared about to not find friends, because I’m not used to be sociale or something like that. But as I told before since I’m here I’m really a different person. I don’t recognise myself, like a better version of me.

The place that I choose : the Bute park. At the beginning I choose this place because it is the park that I have to crosse every time I want to go the the Uni or go somewhere in the city. I thought of the landscape and the lights which could be interresting into the park as well.  I wanted to hung my artwork between to three to just have the the structure on the photography.

But after when I thought again about my display I choose the hung it into tree and have all the branches on the picture. The tree represents the created links between us like a genealogy trees

As you can see it is the first pictures of my art work with all the details of it. We can see the main structure on the cupboard, it really compact and as I said before each cup are linked together with steel wire node.

I really want to finish my work with this artwork but because of the actual weather I can’t do that because of the rain and the wind but especially because of the night as well. I really hope that I could finish my work in time. Because the deadline is the next week. And when I checked the weather for the end of the week it is not really good. It will rain all the week..

Actually I’m really scared about that.

Field – Object ( Post n°5)

This week I started to looking for a place where I could positioned my final object. I chose the bute park, near of my house, especially a place which is located just behind the “Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama”. This is place which is clear and where trees are still colourful, could be perfect.

I started to build my objet as well, I bough all the material I needed : red cup, steel wire, plastic wire, and wire cutter at the beginning of the week.

Wednesday I worked all the day on my object to creat the main structure.

The main structure is composed by red cup and steel wire, all the cup are gather together very strongly. This strength will serve us to maintain the whole artwork because I need something strong to be suspended in the trees.

How I proceed to build this structure?. I begin to take one red cup and to passed a steel wire through this red cup, it will be the first cup which all the others will be attached. For each cup we needed to blocked the movement so I turned the steel wire like a spirale and put it into the whole I formed before. All the cups are oriented in the same direction to give the impression of movement when it will be placed. Finally was able to linked one hundred cups together in one day.

The next step will be to continued a little bit to build the main structure to make it bigger and use the plastic wire and some red cups which will linked together. Those structures will be fixed on the main structure to have the impression of an explosion, a living artwork which is moving with the wind or the weather.

Field : Object – My iconic object (Post n°4)

For this project my final I chose to do my display in the Bute Park. It will be like a dialogue with the landscape and the weather. (Especially here the weather can change very quickly..)

I’m looking for a few different attributes in an object. I want something to be cheap as possible but I also want it to be iconic. The one we should be instantly recognisable and loaded with the associations I want.  Like positive vibes, friendly, funny, colourful. It can also be a environmental message play too. So I chose the “red cup.”

I’m hesitating between solo cup, balloon or plates. Because the main meaning of those three or party, friends, joy.. Like the life I have here with all my friends.  I also choose things based on how easy to work with they’ll be as sculptural objects.

To make it I will put on the main structure in the middle to have the strength of the cups to a wire frame so they have some stability, then strung numerous other cups to the monofilaments around the margins, which whipped freely in the wind.

Now I have to start to put cups together and placed them on location, they take on a life of their own, shaking off their established meanings and becoming something funny and new.

Field Object (Post n°3)

Tuesday  20 November we had to work  on our  project in class so I was thinking where I can do my project. I think that now I know in which place I will do my artwork, in the Bute park, near of my house. It is the main park of Cardiff.

It offers an extensive area of nature parkland within Cardiff’s city centre.

There is plenty to do in the park and you can pick up a variety of self-led trails to guide you on certain activities and topics. Situated beyond Cardiff Castle just a short walk from the city’s main high streets and civic centre, Bute Park really is the “green heart of the city”. Full of historic and wildlife interest, at 56 hectares. It is one of the largest urban parks in Wales and comprises a broad mix of historic landscape, urban woodland, sports pitches, arboretum, horticultural features and river corridor..

This park is very particular for me because since the beginning I always had to cross it to go to the school even if I moved 3 times before to find my actual home. Moreover I went to go jogging there as well, meet friends or just take fresh air, therefore I choose this place to make my project.

I think I will go to do my project soon because I really like the colours of the leaves at this perio, especially the yellow one or the orange. It could be great on the photography I think.

For my project I will used like plastic plates or plastic glass which will be translucent and with different colours. I will link them with a plastic translucent wire.

Thursday 16 november 2018 (Session n°2)

This day the class is going to London to experience and discuss a variety of object display strategies. But unfortunately I couldn’t go to this trip because I’m very sick in the bus and it would be difficult for me to do the both way in the same day (almost 6hours maybe).

So thursday I was just thinking about my mind map and what kind of object I can create. I choose my main inspiration.

  • Zandeer Olsen, tree line,  2008
  • Robert Smithson, Jetee Spirale, 1970
  • Christo, Surrounded Island, 1980-1983
  • Nils Udo 1990
  • Thomas Jackson Photography,
  • Garry Barry, Idea of Land art,

With this type of informations I was able to do my mind map. (How does the object make you feel?, How does the object function?, What is the object style?…)

So for me main words are :

  • Nature
  • Land art
  • Op art
  • Ephemeral
  • Photography
  • Vivid color
  • Movement
  • Poetic/ Airy

Even if I write other words those words represents what I want represent.  Something I could represent what I am, with my philosophy and my values.

I want something which is a fusion between two different worlds, create an epic installation on poetic landscape, use nature how I could to do it once and after that my sculpture will disappeared.

An Artwork which can say something without any artifice. I was thinking about something with translucent  colourful stuff which can contrast with the “raw” color of the nature around. And translucent because I want a play with the lights, with the sun ray.
